An Indiana State Police trooper early this morning recovered two handguns which had been reported stolen only an hour before, following a traffic stop on I-80/94 in Lake County, the ISP said.

According to police, at 2:15 a.m. Tywoun D. Nixon, 22, of Gary, was stopped on westbound I-80/94, about a mile west of Grant Street in Gary, after Trooper James Brasseur clocked him at 93 miles per hour in a zone posted at 55 mph.

Brassuer subsequently determined that Nixon had never been licensed and in a search of Nixon’s 2005 Chevrolet Malibu recovered two Glock 9mm handguns under the front passenger’s seat. One of the handguns was loaded, the other not, police said; in addition, Brassuer recovered two magazines each fully loaded with 32 rounds.

Brassuer also determined that the handguns had been reported stolen to the Gary Police Department at 1:18 a.m. today, just an hour before the traffic stop, police said.

Nixon was transported to the Lake County Jail on charges of possession of a stolen handgun, two counts; possession of a handgun without a permit; operating a vehicle without ever being licensed; and violation of a protection order.
