An Indiana State Police trooper and another person were hospitalized on Wednesday, following a two-vehicle accident on an I-80/94 ramp in Lake County, the ISP said.

According to police, at 4:40 a.m. Trooper Nicole Maenza was traveling on the ramp from southbound Cline Ave. to eastbound I-80/94* --described as “snow-covered and slick from earlier weather conditions”* --when she observed a Ford Expedition hit the sound barrier wall.

Maenza was telling the two occupants of the Ford to get back into their vehicle when another vehicle on the ramp* --a Hyundai Sonata driven by a 27-year-old Griffith woman* --struck all three of them, police said.

Maenza, Jorge Carrillo-Padilla, 41, and his brother, Ernesto Carrillo-Padilla, 37, both of Chicago, were all transported to hospital, and Maenza and Jorge Carrillo-Padilla were subsequently admitted with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

“The safest place to be after a crash is anywhere but on or near traffic lanes on the interstate,” the IS said. “Stay inside your vehicle. It offers the most protection.”
