A motorist’s vehicle was hit by gunfire on Friday on I-65 in Lake County, the Indiana State Police is reporting.

According to police, at 6:58 p.m. a car dealership in Highland advised that, approximately 30 minutes earlier, an employee transporting a 2018 Kia Soul from Carmel was northbound in the left lane of I-65 when, just south of U.S. Highway 30, a sliver vehicle pulled up alongside him in the right lane.

“The employee looked over at the driver, saw that the driver’s window was down, and made brief eye contact with the driver,” police said. “He also saw two other occupants in the silver car. The employee then heard ‘shots’ being fired.”

The Kia was subsequently found to have a bullet hole in the rear passenger’s side door, police said. The employee was not injured.

The driver was described as a black male wearing a “scully cap,” while the front-seat passenger and the rear-seat were also both described as black males, police said.

A witness traveling in the left lane behind the Kia described the silver vehicle as a Chevrolet Camaro with Illinois plates.

Anyone who may have any information or witnessed this incident is asked to call Trooper Jerry George at (219) 696-6242.
