A semi hauling 19 tons of bagels caught fire on I-65 in Jasper County on Sunday, the Indiana State Police said.

According to police, at 5:40 p.m. an off-duty trooper observed a semi-tractor trailer northbound on I-65 “smoking heavily from the rear axle” and succeeded in stopping it approximately six miles south of the Rensselaer exit.

“By this time the brakes on the semi-trailer were on fire and spreading to the trailer itself,” police said. “The driver failed to release the brakes, causing them to spark fire. The rear tires exploded due to the heat from the brake fire.

The trucker, Quiner Louis, 31, of Boynton Beach, Fla., managed to disconnect the tractor from the trailer, and firefighters extinguished the blaze, police said.

Louis was hauling 38,000 pounds of frozen bagels.

The right lane of I-65 was closed until 1 a.m. today for removal of the trailer and cleanup, police added.
