A semi crashed on I-80/94 in Lake County early this morning, then caught fire, the Indiana State Police said.

According to police, at 1:25 a.m. Mark S. Nelson, 61, of Dewey, Ariz., was eastbound on I-80/94 when he attempted to enter the far right merge lane for the Indiana Toll Road but ran off the road for unknown reasons.

Nelsonís rig struck the impact attenuator, and--although he escaped injury in the crash--his tractor ignited, police said. The 2019 Kenworth tractor was destroyed in the fire, while the front end of the trailer was damaged, but Nelsonís load of industrial washers appeared to be intact, police said.

The eastbound lanes of traffic were closed until approximately 3 a.m., when the inner shoulder and the left lane were re-opened. The right lane was re-opened later in the morning.
