A trucker was cited early this morning after he crashed his rig in a construction zone on I-80/94 in Lake County, the Indiana State Police said.

According to police, at 3:10 a.m. Rodney J. Wealing of Fowler, Ind., was eastbound on I-80/94 when, 1,500 feet east of Cline Ave. in Gary, he failed to negotiate a lane shift while reaching for a water bottle. Police said that Wealing’s rig struck a concrete barrier wall and came to rest in the right lane.

The crash ripped open the side of Wealing’s trailer and his load of 45,000 pounds of steel had to be off-loaded before the trailer and tractor could be towed, police said.

The right two lanes of I-80/94 were closed,” resulting in an “extended backup,” police said.

Wealing escaped injury but was issued a citation for unsafe lane movement, police said.

His rig is owned by Action SCS LLC of Attica, Ind.

All lanes were re-opened at 7:30 a.m.
