A Gary resident was arrested Wednesday on multiple drug charges after he was stopped for a seatbelt violation, the Indiana State Police said.

According to police, at 10:44 p.m. Jay L. Francis, 23, was stopped for the violation in the area of 19th and Hayes Street. On further investigation, police said, the trooper recovered six plastic bags each containing approximately one pound of a substance which subsequently field-tested positive for marijuana.

Total yield, police said: six pounds of marijuana.

Francis was charged with possession of marijuana with a weight in excess of 30 grams, dealing marijuana, and operating while intoxicated-controlled substance and transported to Lake County Jail, police said.

“This stop is an example of how criminals and illegal drugs are often discovered on traffic stops for simple traffic violations,” police said. “Anyone with information about illegal drugs can call the Indiana State Police Drug Tip Line at (800) 453-4756. Tips can be made and kept anonymous.”
