The Indiana State Police was reporting that a motorist’s life was saved this morning by seatbelt and airbag, after she lost control of her vehicle on I-80/94 in Lake County and hit a semi.

According to police, at 8 a.m. Wykesha Sanders, 37, of Gary, was westbound in the right middle lane of I-80/94 when she merged into the right lane. A vehicle in front of her, however, braked sharply, prompting Sanders to brake as well, at which time she lost control of her 1996 Ford Crown Victoria, slid back across the westbound lanes, and struck a semi-tractor trailer in the left middle lane, police said.

The driver’s side of Sanders’ Crown Victoria and the hood went under the trailer and Sanders had to be extricated, police said.

“Because Sanders was wearing her seat belts and her air bags deployed she was taken to Munster Community Hospital with non-life threatening injuries,” police said.

The driver of the semi, Vern Nice, 61, of Titusville, Fla., escaped injury, police added.
