A rollover crash on the Toll Road in East Chicago near the 7.5 mile marker stopped traffic for 3 hours on Tuesday, Indiana State Police said.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper O’Bryan Winfield revealed that at 1:20 p.m. a 2002 Chevrolet Express van, driven by James Gasaway, 28, of Lake Station, was traveling westbound near the 7.5 mile marker when he got a flat tire and began trying to drive the vehicle to a safe location to change the tire. The vehicle was partially in the right lane of travel and was struck by a 2006 Chevrolet Avalanche, driven by Scott Jordan, 51, of Park Ridge, Illinois. After striking the van from behind, the Avalanche rolled two times, coming to a rest on its roof in the roadway, police said.

According to police, Mr. Jordan was transported to the University of Chicago where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. All westbound lanes remained closed for three hours for investigation and removal of the scene.

Police report alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash and the investigation is still ongoing. Assisting were Corporal Glenn Katayama, Troopers Amjad Umrani, Paul Arnold, and Kurt Jones, Hammond Police Department, Hammond Fire Department, and Herreras Towing.
