A Chicago man driving a box truck was arrested Monday on a charge of leaving the scene of an accident after rear ending a vehicle on Ind. 51 (Ripley Street) in Lake Station, the Indiana State Police said.

According to police, at 3:40 p.m. Martell M. Reynolds, 25, was northbound on Ind. 51, when he rear ended a second vehicle stopped for a red light in front of the Flying J Truck Stop. After the collision, police said, Reynolds drove around the second vehicle and exited Ind. 51 onto westbound I-80. The driver of the second vehicle, however, followed Reynolds and kept an ISP dispatcher apprised of Reynolds’ location, police said.

Reynolds was stopped on I-80 near Indianapolis Blvd., where he told troopers that “his brakes weren’t working so he couldn’t stop.”

“Troopers found this suspicious because when they stopped the truck they were on a hill crest yet the truck never rolled back,” police said. “Reynolds also stated he was coming back from Ohio and the brakes just went out on Ripley Street.”

Reynolds was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and issued citations for no proof of financial responsibility and no commercial driver’s license, police said. He was transported to Lake County Jail.

The driver of the second vehicle and his passenger complained of pain but both refused treatment at the scene, police said.
