A Whiting resident was seriously injured on Wednesday after being pinned between two vehicles on an I-80-94 on-ramp in Lake County, the Indiana State Police said.

According to police, at 6:40 a.m. Eric Anthony was traveling on the ramp from southbound Calumet Ave. to eastbound I-80/94 when he lost control on the icy road surface. After coming to a controlled stop on the outside shoulder, Anthony exited his 2006 Ford van and was standing behind it when a 2013 Ford Focus driven by Michael Daniel, 25, of Griffith, also lost control, striking Anthony and pinning him between his van and the Ford Focus, police said.

Danielís Ford Focus was then struck in turn by a 2004 Jeep SUV driven by Esmeralda Ruiz, 20, of Griffith, who similarly lost control of her vehicle, police said.

Anthony was transported with serious leg injuries to Methodist Hospital Northlake Campus in Gary, then transferred to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Ill., police said.

Daniel was transported to Munster Community Hospital with a complaint of pain, while Ruiz escaped injury, police said.

The ramp was closed for several hours, police added.
