A motorist who the Indiana State Police said led Merrillville officers on a high-speed pursuit on Wednesday died when his car hit a tree in Gary.

The motorist was identified as Nicholas Moore, 26, of Gary.

According to the ISP, at 11:36 a.m. Moore was northbound in the 3600 block of Georgia Street, at a high rate of speed, when he lost control of the car he was driving, a 2006 Mercedes Benz C20, and hit a tree head-on behind a residence.

The Mercedes burst into flames, the ISP said, and Moore was pulled from the car by a Merrillville Police officer and a good Samaritan.

Earlier Merrillville Police officers had been involved in a pursuit of the Mercedes, the ISP said.

Moore was transported to Northlake Methodist Hospital in Gary, where he was pronounced dead of massive trauma.
