A Chesterton motorist escaped injury on Saturday in a three-vehicle accident
on I-80 in Lake County, the Indiana State Police said.
According to police, at 6:58 p.m. trucker Frank Miller, 64, of Cambria
Heights, N.Y., was eastbound in the middle right lane of I-80, just west of
Burr Street, and Yajaira Velez, 23, of Evergreen Park, Ill., was eastbound
in the far right lane, when they collided.
Miller and Velez gave conflicting statements as to who made a lane change
into the other’s lane of travel, police said.
In any case, the front passenger’s side of Miller’s rig struck the driver’s
door of Velez’s 1995 Honda Civic, causing Velez to spin around in front of
the semi and then into the left lane, where it was facing southbound when
Israel Velez, 32, of Chesterton, collided with it, police said.
Israel Velez is not related to Yajaira Velez, police said.
Neither Miller nor Israel Velez was injured but Yajaira was treated for back
pain at NorthLake Methodist Hospital in Gary, police said. Her front-seat
passenger, Vincent Cordone, 28, also of Evergreen Park, was transported to
NorthLake with a serious but non-life threatening head injury, police said.
A child in the back seat of the Yajaira’s car was properly restrained in a
child safety seat and not injured, police said.
The two left lanes were closed for approximately one hour. All lanes were
re-opened at 8:06 p.m.
