A Lake County Sheriff’s Police officer was arrested early this morning on a charge of operating while intoxicated, following an accident in Schererville, the Indiana State Police said.

According to the ISP, at 3 a.m. the Schererville PD was dispatched to the scene of a crash in the 5400 block of 75th Ave., where officers made contact with LCSP Sgt. Joseph Hardiman, 34.

The ISP said that investigation determined that Hardiman--driving his personal vehicle, a 2009 Ford van--had swerved to avoid a deer in the road and in doing so had struck a parked unoccupied vehicle. “Damage to both vehicles was substantial, the ISP said.

After further investigation, Hardiman registered a blood alcohol content of .19 percent on a certified chemical test and was transported to Lake County Jail, the ISP said.

The ISP assisted the SPD with its investigation.
