A Shaker Heights, Ohio, man died on Friday after crashing his vehicle on
I-80 in Lake County in what proved to be a medical emergency, the Indiana
State Police said.
The victim was identified as Stanley Williams, 77.
According to police, at 2:56 p.m. Williams was westbound in the left lane,
at the 2.4 mile marker just west of the Indianapolis Blvd. exit, when his
2011 Honda CRV left the roadway and hit the concrete median wall, bouncing
off the wall several times without stopping.
Two witnesses, in different vehicles, witnessed the crash. One of them,
Lavoris Lee, 35, of Merrillville, realizing that Williams’ Honda was not
stopping, pulled his own 2000 Ford Taurus in front of the car to stop it,
police said. The second witness, a Munster volunteer firefighter, stopped at
the scene, understood that Williams was having a medical emergency, and
began CPR, police said.
Williams was later pronounced dead at Munster Community Hospital, police
said. His wife, in the car at the time, was not injured.
Damage to Lee’s Ford Taurus was minimal, police added.
