ISP: Gary police officer injured in crash on I-80/94

A Gary Police officer was injured on Sunday when a pickup pulling a small trailer lost control and hit the officer’s police car on I-80/94 in Lake County, the Indiana State Police said.

According to police, at 8:24 a.m. Todd A. Vohwinkle, 52, of Mattawan, Mich., was westbound on I-80/94 when, east of Burr Street, when he lost control on the icy road surface after another vehicle passed him on the left at high speed. Vohwinkle’s pickup and trailer began to fishtail, traveled across all lanes of westbound traffic to the right, and struck the driver’s door of a GPD squad car being driven by Officer Shane S. Bolde, 38.

BoldeÑa 12-year veteran of the GPDÑwas pushed into the concrete barrier on the right, police said.

Bolde was transported to North Lake Methodist Hospital in Gary with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Both Bolde and Vohwinkle were wearing their seat belts. Vohwinkle was not injured.
