The condition of a
child ejected from a vehicle on I-80/94 in Lake County on Sunday was unknown
today, the Indiana State Police said.
police, at 1:20 a.m. Larry Lathan, 38, of Chicago, was eastbound on I-80/94
when approximately one-half mile east of Burr Street, he left the roadway
for unknown reasons. Lathan’s 2002 GMC cargo van rolled at least once before
coming to rest upright in a ditch, ejecting a one-year-old boy “who was not
properly restrained in a child restraint at the time of the crash,” police
The child was
initially transported to Methodist Hospital Northlake Campus in Gary, then
subsequently taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago “with unknown
injuries at this time,” police said.
Lathan was also
transported to the Northlake Campus, where he was “being kept for
observation and a consensual blood draw,” police said.
“Lathan was cited
for operating while intoxicated-causing serious bodily injuries and neglect
of a dependent,” police said.
