The condition of a child ejected from a vehicle on I-80/94 in Lake County on Sunday was unknown today, the Indiana State Police said.

According to police, at 1:20 a.m. Larry Lathan, 38, of Chicago, was eastbound on I-80/94 when approximately one-half mile east of Burr Street, he left the roadway for unknown reasons. Lathan’s 2002 GMC cargo van rolled at least once before coming to rest upright in a ditch, ejecting a one-year-old boy “who was not properly restrained in a child restraint at the time of the crash,” police said.

The child was initially transported to Methodist Hospital Northlake Campus in Gary, then subsequently taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago “with unknown injuries at this time,” police said.

Lathan was also transported to the Northlake Campus, where he was “being kept for observation and a consensual blood draw,” police said.

“Lathan was cited for operating while intoxicated-causing serious bodily injuries and neglect of a dependent,” police said.
