A Chicago man died
in a fiery crash on Sunday on an Indiana Toll Road on-ramp in Lake County,
the Indiana State Police said.
The victim was
identified as James J. Ariel, 22.
police, at 8:31 a.m. troopers responded to a report of a single vehicle on
fire in a ditch just off the ramp from northbound I-65 to the westbound Toll
arrived minutes later but were unable immediately to gain entry into the car
due to the intense fire, police said. The Gary Fire Department then
succeeded in controlling the blaze enough to permit a trooper and
firefighter to break the driver’s side window of Ariel’s 2007 Chevrolet
Malibu and remove him from the vehicle, but despite troopers’ prompt
first-aid Ariel never revived, police said.
“During this time,
the fire flared back up in the car and it became fully involved,” police
said. “It is unknown at this time what caused the driver to go off the ramp
into the north ditch.”
