ISP Charged with OWI in three vehicle accident

A Hobart resident was arrested Saturday on a charge of operating while intoxicated, following a three-vehicle accident on I-80/94 in Lake County, the Indiana State Police said.

According to police, at 3:10 p.m. Charlton Johnson, 42, was westbound on I-80/94 when, near the Burr Street exit, he began to drive on the right shoulder, clipping a second vehicle traveling in the right lane and causing it to cross all westbound lanes and strike the concrete median wall. The second vehicle then re-entered the westbound lanes, where it collided with a semi-tractor trailer in an impact which separated the semiís rear tandem wheels from the trailer.

Johnson and the truck driver escaped injury, police said, while the driver of the second vehicle was transported to Methodist Hospital Northlake Campus in Gary with non-life threatening injuries.

Johnson subsequently registered a blood alcohol content over twice the legal limit of .08 percent, police said.

He was transported to Lake County Jail on a charge of operating while intoxicated.
