A Hobart resident was charged with operating while intoxicated following a four-vehicle crash early this morning on I-80/94 in Lake County, the Indiana State Police said.

According to police, at 3 a.m. Andrew J. Lech, 38, was entering westbound I-80/94 from northbound I-65 when he failed to yield to a semi-tractor trailer traveling westbound in the right lane of I-80/94. Lech’s 2017 Ford Explorer “ricocheted off” the semi and went southbound across I-80/04, striking a second semi hauling two trailers, police said.

Lech’s Explorer ricocheted a second time, traveling north back across I-80/94 and striking the outer concrete barrier wall, where it came to rest. Meanwhile, a third semi rear-ended the first semi struck by Lech, police said.

Lech was subsequently found to be impaired, police said, “testing almost three times over the legal limit of .08 percent.”

Lech was transported to Lake County Jail.
