Two California residents were arrested Thursday on a charge of dealing heroin, following a traffic stop on the Indiana Toll Road in Porter County, the Indiana State Police is reporting.

According to police, at 5:40 p.m. a trooper stopped Yudith Valenzuela, 37, and her passenger, Luis Garcia, 31, both of Los Angeles, for unspecified traffic violations approximately six miles east of the Chesterton Toll Road exit.

The trooper, after speaking to the two, “became suspicious of criminal activity” and a K-9 partner, Axel, was dispatched to the scene, where the dog subsequently alerted to the odor of narcotics, police said.

Located in the trunk were five cellophane wrapped packages of suspected heroin, each weighing approximately a kilogram (2.2 pounds), police said.

Valenzuela and Garcia were transported to the Porter County Jail.
