A Gary man accused of fatally shooting another Gary man on an I-80/94
on-ramp in September has surrendered himself, the Indiana State Police said.
According to police, on Monday afternoon Rickey Smith, 29, turned himself in
to the Lake County Sheriff’s Police and was subsequently booked into the
Lake County Jail on a charge of murder in connection with the death of Tyron
Hopkins, 44.
Police say that Smith shot Hopkins at 10:39 a.m. Sept. 13 on the ramp from
southbound Grant Street to eastbound I-80, after an earlier altercation with
Hopkins’ brother. Hopkins was transported to NorthLake Methodist Hospital in
Gary, where he later died of his wounds.
