The Indiana Department of Natural Resources has identified the man whose body was recovered in Lake Michigan off Indiana Dunes State Park beach on Saturday.

The victim was identified after deadline on Monday as Brandon Howard, 32, of Constantine, Mich.

Cause of death, pending the results of a routine toxicology screen, DNR said: asphyxiation due to accidental drowning.

Howard’s body was recovered in approximately 10 feet of water at 8 p.m. Saturday, roughly two hours after an on-duty lifeguard saw him struggling in the water, then slip below and fail to surface.

The body was discovered by a Chesterton Fire Department diver, Marc Mihalik, as he was being towed by a Porter Fire Department boat.

Porter Fire Chief Jay Craig told the Chesterton Tribune on Monday that “It’s believed (Howard) came off a sand bar while chasing a football.”
