Indiana 49 and Indian Boundary scene of three accidents in Friday snow

Four-vehicle crash in Friday's snow at 49 and Indiana Boundary

No one was injured Friday and no one cited in a four-vehicle accident at the intersection of Ind. 49 and Indian Boundary Road, Chesterton Police said.

According to police, at 4:20 p.m. Christina M. Tolomei, 28, of Warsaw, Ind., was southbound on Ind. 49 when she attempted to turn right--“going too fast for the roadway conditions”--slid on the snowy road surface, and struck three other vehicles eastbound on Indian Boundary Road and stopped for a red light.

The driver of the second vehicle was Katherine L. Underwood, 32, of Crown Point; the driver of the third, Norman W. Whitmer, 61, of Chesterton; and the driver of the fourth, Joel D. Coiner III, 31, of Chicago.

Police estimated total damage to Tolomei’s 2008 Chrysler 300, Underwood’s 2013 Ford Escape, Whitmer’s 2016 Ram 2500, and Coiner’s 2015 Chrysler 200 at up to $10,000.

Three-vehicle crash

No one was injured Friday and no one cited in a three-vehicle accident at the intersection of Ind. 49 and Indian Boundary Road, Chesterton Police said.

According to police, at 2:25 p.m. Jennifer Melton, 26, of Chesterton, was southbound on Ind. 49 when she attempted to turn right onto westbound Indian Boundary Road, slid on the snow road surface, and struck a second vehicle eastbound on Indian Boundary Road and stopped in the left-turn lane. The impact then forced the second vehicle into a third stopped in the eastbound through-lane.

The driver of the second vehicle was Jeremy R. Sutton, 46, of LaPorte. The driver of the third vehicle was Collin W. Koch, 59, of Chesterton.

Police estimated total damage to Melton’s 2009 Mitsubishi Galant, Sutton’s 2007 Chevrolet Silverado, and Koch’s 2016 Chevrolet Equinox at up to $10,000.

Hit-and-run

Chesterton Police are seeking the driver of a minivan involved in a hit-and-run accident on Friday at the intersection of Ind. 49 and Indian Boundary Road.

According to police, at 2:40 p.m. the unknown driver of a gold or tan minivan was southbound on Ind. 49 when he or she attempted to turn right onto westbound Indian Boundary Road, slid on the snowy road surface, and struck a second vehicle eastbound on Indian Boundary Road and stopped in the left-turn lane.

The driver of the minivan then fled the scene and was last seen westbound on Indian Boundary Road.

Police estimated damage to the second vehicle at up to $2,500.
