A Hometown, Ill., man was seriously injured Monday in a two vehicle accident
on I-80 in Lake County, the Indiana State Police said.
According to police, at 4:10 p.m. Brian Reierson, 33, was westbound at the
11.1 mile marker, approximately one mile east of the Broadway exit, when he
rear ended a semi-tractor trailer.
Reierson, driving a 2005 Ford pickup, “was traveling at a high rate of
speed, in the well-marked 55 mile per hour posted speed zone, when (he) hit
the trailer,” police said. His pickup then swerved to the right, striking
the concrete barrier wall at a 90-degree angle.
“Reierson was not wearing a seatbelt but his airbag deployed,” police said.
Reierson, who sustained “serious internal injuries and critical injuries to
his neck and head,” was transported to Northlake Methodist Hospital in Gary,
then airlifted to Loyola Medical Center in Illinois, police said.
“Alcohol was a factor in this crash,” police said.
The trucker, John English, 25, of Washington, Mich., was not injured.
