Hebron man charged with animal cruelty in beating death of 2 pug dogs

A Hebron man has been charged in connection with the beating death of two pugs stolen from a Gary residence in February.

Charged with one count of animal cruelty was Anthony M. Priestas, 23, who has addresses both in Hebron and Hammond.

According to police, the PCSP and the Lake County Sheriff’s Police have been jointly investigating the theft on Feb. 21 of a pair of pugs during the burglary of a Gary home. The dogs were subsequently found beaten to death in rural Porter Township in Porter County.

Investigators, working with family and witnesses, developed information identifying Priestas as a suspect, and he was arrested early Tuesday evening by PCSP Sgt. Brian Dziedzinski, police said.

Animal cruelty is a Level 6 felony punishable by a term of six to 30 months.
