Fireworks left burning on a picnic table did some damage early this morning
in Coffee Creek Park, the Chesterton Fire Department said.
Capt. Rudy Jimenez told the Chesterton Tribune today that firefighters were
dispatched to the park at 5:22 a.m. after a blaze was reported in one of the
roofed picnic areas along the boardwalk east of the horseshoe pit.
On their arrival, Jimenez said, firefighters found that still burning
fireworks left on top of a picnic table had burned through the table, fallen
onto the boardwalk beneath, and burned a hole in the boardwalk itself.
Firefighters used around 40 gallons of water from portable extinguishers,
then dumped several buckets of creek water on the site for good measure.
Three heavy beams from the table top were ruined, a support strut was
charred, and some of the planking on the boardwalk will have to be replaced.
Jimenez estimated total damage at $500.
The CFD notified the Chesterton Police Department of the incident and Park
Superintendent Bruce Mathias has been advised.
