Family Express in Portage robbed

The Family Express gas station at 5901 U.S. Highway 6 was robbed at gunpoint on Friday, Portage Police said.

According to police, at 4:20 a.m. a male subject entered the store, carrying a thin rifle type weapon. Police said that he removed the cash register tray with the money still in it and then fled on foot to the west of the business.

Nearby security cameras captured the suspect running from the store and behind Portage Car Wash, where it is believed he entered a waiting vehicle.

The suspect is described as a white male, late teens to early 20s, approximately 5' 7’’ to 5' 9’’ in height, with a thin build, brown eyes, and clean complexion, wearing black gym shoes with a white design on them, black jeans, and a black hoodie with “PJM Softball” (Portage Junior Miss) on the front of the hoodie.

The hooded suspect--who police said has a “young look”--was also wearing some type of beanie type cap pulled down to the top of his eyes and a red bandana covering his face just under his eyes.

Approximately five minutes before the robbery, a mid 1990s red Ford Mustang (possibly a convertible) entered the lot from the west and immediately made a U-turn, exited the lot, and continued westbound on US 6. It is unknown if this vehicle was involved in the robbery but police called its actions “suspicious.”

Anyone with information about the suspect or the robbery is asked to contact Det. Vaughn at the Portage Police Department at (219) 764-5705.

The normal business line for the department is (219) 762-3122.
