An ex-boyfriend and girlfriend have been charged with molesting an infant,
the Porter County Sheriff’s Police said.
Charged with child molesting and neglect of a dependent is Dana J. Haywood,
19, of 5678 Ruth Ave. in Portage.
Charged with child molesting is James E. Glanders, 21, of 509 E. Indiana
Ave. in Michigan City.
According to the probable cause affidavit filed by Det. Gene Hopkins, on
March 3 Haywood contacted the PCSP to report that her ex-boyfriend, Glanders,
had had intimate contact with an infant in her care, approximately a month
earlier while he was changing her diaper in the back seat of their vehicle,
at Haven Hollow Park in South Haven.
“Haywood said she threatened to tell people about it but (Glanders) told her
no one would ever believe her,” Hopkins stated in his affidavit. “According
to Haywood, (Glanders) has told her over the phone that he wants to have sex
with (the child). Haywood advised that she wanted to tell the police about
the incident but that she is scared of (Glanders).”
Glanders, interviewed on March 13, initially denied the allegation,
then—after showing deception on voice stress analysis—admitted that he had
had intimate contact with the child, but only after Haywood had “told him to
do it,” Hopkins stated.
Glanders also showed Hopkins text messages from Haywood, sent on March 13,
in which Haywood asked him if he “still” wanted to have intimate contact
with the child. “The text messages continued with some very graphic
references to sexual contact with the baby,” Hopkins stated.
On March 14, Hopkins interviewed Haywood, who admitted that she also had had
intimate contact with the child “because (Glanders) had told her to do it,”
Hopkins stated. That contact only occurred “one time,” she advised, about
two months earlier.
Haywood is charged with a Class B felony count of child molesting,
punishable by a term of six to 20 years. Neglect of a dependent is a Class D
felony, punishable by a term of six months to three years.
Glanders is charged with a Class A felony count of child molesting,
punishable by a term of 20 to 50 years.
