A dump truck driver who forgot to lower his dump this morning struck a bridge on southbound I-65 in Lake County, in an accident which blocked both lanes, the Indiana State Police said.

According to police, at 6 a.m. truck Michael J. Hoff, 46, of Dyer, was southbound on I-65--having just dumped a load at a construction site off U.S. Highway 30--when his dump, still in the up position, hit an overhead bridge near 93rd Street.

The collision caused the dump to detach from the tractor and overturn, blocking the right lane, while debris was strewn across the interstate, blocking the left lane, police said. Traffic managed to pass through the area on the inner shoulder but both lanes were closed for more than 90 minutes, police said.

Hoff sustained minor injuries in the crash, police said, and all lanes were reopened at approximately 7:30 a.m. A bridge inspector has been notified to inspect the bridge.

Hoff was driving for Material Transfer of Schererville.
