Driver dies when truck hit by South Shore train

A Valparaiso man was killed on Tuesday after his pickup truck was struck by a South Shore commuter train at the Porter/Lake County Line Road grade-crossing, the Porter County Coronerís Office is reporting.

The victim has been identified as Todd R. Crum.

According to the Coronerís Office, at 5:32 p.m. Crum was southbound on County Line Road, immediately north of U.S. Highway 12, when he attempted to drive around the downed gates and was struck on his passengerís side by an eastbound South Shore train.

Crumís 1996 Ford Ranger caught on fire and was dragged for several hundred yards, the Coronerís Office said.

No one on the train was injured, the Coronerís Office said.

South Shore trains were stopped in both directions for several hours.

The investigation is still ongoing and multiple agencies, including the Gary Police Department and the NICTD Transit Police responded to the scene.
