Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating an incident that left a Knox man injured as a result of a single gunshot on Sunday.

According to the Department of Natural Resources, at approximately 6:30 a.m. Earl Sponaugle, 52, was turkey- and mushroom-hunting on his own property in the area of 150N 500E in Knox, when a turkey hunter on a neighboring property saw white and--thinking it the head of a male turkey--fired a single shot from his 12-gauge shotgun.

The round hit Sponaugle in the shoulder and ear, the DNR said. Sponaugle was treated at Starke County Hospital and subsequently released.

“The investigation is ongoing, and a report will be submitted to the Starke County Prosecutor for review upon completion,” the DNR said.

“Indiana Conservation Officers stress the importance of proper target identification while hunting and being aware of what is beyond your intended target,” the DNR added.
