A Highland man died on Sunday after he crashed an off-road vehicle in
downtown Highland, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said.
The victim was identified as Richard Haschke, 50.
According to the DNR, at 3:26 a.m. responders were dispatched to the 2900
block of Condit Street in Highland, after Haschke rolled the Polaris Ranger
he was operating. Haschke was pronounced dead at the scene of multiple head
injuries, while one of his passengers, Jeffery Cifaldi, 31, of LaPorte, was
transported to Munster Community Hospital for treatment of a broken arm, the
DNR said. Haschke’s other passenger, Bryan Minnich, 42, of Highland, was
treated at the scene and released.
“The accident is still under investigation,” the DNR said. “Alcohol is
believed to be a contributing factor in the cause of the crash. Safety belts
were not being worn by any of the occupants of the Ranger.”
Other responding agencies were the Lake County Coroner’s Office, the
Highland Fire Department, and the Highland Police Department.
