A Washington Township man died on Monday after losing control of his vehicle on Ind. 49 in Liberty Township, the Porter County Sheriff’s Police is reporting.

The victim has been identified as Dennis Clem, 63.

According to police, at 5:22 p.m. Clem was northbound on Ind. 49 when for unknown reasons, just south of the C.R. 900N overpass, he lost control of his 2003 Jaguar, left the roadway, and entered the median. Clem then traveled between the north- and southbound lanes until the median gave out onto the CSX railroad tracks beneath and he “disappeared into the opening,” his Jaguar landing on the tracks approximately 100 yards from the crossing, police said.

Clem was pronounced dead at the scene by the Coroner’s Office.

The results of a routine toxicology screen are pending, police said.

Assisting at the scene were the Liberty Township Volunteer and Chesterton fire departments, Joe’s Towing of Chesterton, and the CSX Railroad.
