Craig Barnes, a former Burns Harbor police officer and current Burns Harbor
resident and currently with Lynwood, Ill., Police Department, was critically
injured in a motorcycle accident over Father's Day Weekend in Iowa on
Saturday, June 14, 2014, while on a trip with friends and fellow officers.
He suffered multiple fractures to his skull, face and ribs, as well damage
to the lining of his lungs and is currently on a breathing machine. He has
had surgery to relieve the pressure on his brain and there may be more
injuries, which according to the treating doctors won’t be known until the
most serious issues are first addressed.
Soon, Craig will need to be airlifted from the University of Iowa Hospital
to Northwestern Hospital in Chicago to receive further neurological
treatment which Northwestern can provide. However, the insurance will not
cover the $10,000 airlift cost. To help with the cost and to provide support
for his family going forward, friends are humbly asking for donations.
Craig is from Highland, Ind., originally and now lives in Burns Harbor. He
and his wife Jennifer and have four children, Kyle, Zach, Jake and step-son,
Lou. Kyle graduated from Chesterton High School last year and was accepted
into the United States Air Force last fall, following in Craig’s footsteps.
Zach, who has Muscular Dystrophy, will be attending Ball State University
this year, Jake will be a sophomore this year at CHS and Lou, a star
athlete, will be a freshman at CHS as well.
Craig is also a devoted son. Craig’s father, Larry Barnes, is a retired
police officer from Highland, Ind. Craig is brother, uncle, nephew and dear
friend to many people and fellow police officers in Northwest Indiana and
the south suburbs of Chicago. As well as the Air Force Special Police, Air
Marshall, Customs and Railroad Police, he has served on several local police
departments including; Highland, Burnham, Ill., Porter, Burns Harbor, and
currently Lynwood, Ill.
Craig has selflessly served his country and its citizens and has been there
to help family and friends whenever they needed it. Now, he desperately
needs help. Any help will be greatly and humbly appreciated.
