CPD: Two injured, trucker cited in Indiana 49 accident

Two people were injured on Tuesday and a trucker cited in a two-vehicle accident on Ind. 49, Chesterton Police said.

According to police, at 12:14 p.m. trucker Doru Gheorghita, 54, of Chicago, was northbound on Ind. 49 when he rear-ended a second vehicle which had stopped for a yellow light at the intersection of Gateway Blvd.

The driver of the second vehicle was Keith D. Lakin, 86, of Chesterton.

Lakin complained of neck pain and his passenger, Mary E. Lakin, 82, also of Chesterton, complained of back pain, police said.

Gheorghita was issued a citation for following too closely, police said.

Police estimated total damage to Gheorghita’s 2001 Volvo tractor and Lakin’s 2005 Dodge Caravan at up to $5,000.
