A Valparaiso resident was issued a summons on Wednesday to appear in court on a charge of reckless driving after Chesterton Police said she committed a stop-arm violation on U.S. Highway 6 in Liberty Township.

According to police, at 2:45 p.m. an officer was following a Duneland Schools bus--as part of the Stop Arm Violations Enforcement blitz, funded by a grant from the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute--when he observed a motorist subsequently identified as Samantha Zaremba, 24, pass the bus on its driver’s side as it was stopped on eastbound U.S. 6 west of Meridian Road to unload children.

“The stop-arm on the bus was activated for approximately five seconds before the suspect vehicle passed,” police said. “All other traffic, including westbound, was stopped at the time of the violation.”

When stopped by the officer, Zaremba “advised that she did not know she had to stop if she was passing in a separate driving lane from the one the bus was stopped in,” police said.

The officer informed Zaremba that, under Indiana Code, she indeed did have to stop, issued her a summons to appear in court on a charge of reckless driving, then released her at the scene, police said.
