A driver was injured on Wednesday in a three-vehicle accident on West Morgan Ave., in front of Chesterton Middle School during the morning drop-off, Chesterton Police said.

According to police, at 7:26 a.m. Amanda Marlow, 33, of Hobart, had just dropped her child off at CMS and was starting to leave, eastbound on West Morgan Ave., when “she looked down at her phone while pulling away from the curb.” Marlow--who also advised police that “the sunlight was right in her eyes”--then rear-ended a second vehicle, and the impact of the collision forced the second vehicle into the rear of a third.

The driver of the second vehicle was Amy N. Walker, 42, of Jackson Township. The driver of the third vehicle was Nicholas Waluszko, 67, of Chesterton.

Police said that Marlow complained of head pain and was transported to the Franciscan Alliance ER department on Indian Boundary Road.

Walker and Waluszko had already dropped off their children, police said, and were waiting to pull away from the curb at the time of the accident. Neither was injured.

Police estimated total damage to Marlow’s 1999 Dodge Durango, Walker’s 2012 GMC Yukon, and Waluszko’s 2013 Ford Fiesta at up to $10,000.
