CPD: Man's death greatly exaggerated in benefit scam

Back To Front Page

Chesterton Police have taken the report of a resident whose death was falsely claimed, apparently by his ex-wife.

According to police, on Tuesday the resident advised that, after applying for a personal loan, he was informed that a credit check showed him to be dead and that a death benefits claim on his Social Security number had been filed on Jan. 1.

The resident went to the local Social Security Administration office, where, after he had produced several pieces of identification, the SSA clerk “agreed he was not deceased,” police said.

It was subsequently learned that a woman residing in Plymouth, Ind.--evidently the resident’s ex-wife--had declared him dead and was attempting to claim Social Security benefits. Police said that it was unknown at this time whether she has actually received any.
