A Valparaiso man was injured on Wednesday after getting his arm caught in a beaver trap which someone had set near the playground area at Coffee Creek Park.

According to police, at 4:38 p.m. the 18-year-old man was with his girlfriend at the park when he spotted the trap, “just west of the playground, across the second bridge.” The man, not knowing what the device was, reached to pick it up and “it clamped down on his arm,” police said.

The man’s girlfriend then drove him to the Porter EMS ambulance barn at 601 E. Porter Ave., where personnel cut and removed the trap, splinted and wrapped the arm, then transported him to Porter Regional Hospital, police said.

The investigating officer, for her part, left the ambulance barn to “check the walking path (at Coffee Creek Park) and the area around it for any sign of other animal traps,” police said. None was located.
