Chesterton Police are investigating the smash-and-grab burglary early this morning of the Cigarette Discount Outlet at 560 Indian Boundary Road.

According to police, video surveillance showed the following.

At 3:40 a.m. exactly two males in what appeared to be a pickup truck backed up to the business’ front door, struck the door three times with an ax in an unsuccessful attempt to gain entry, then did succeed in breaking the glass window.

The pair next entered the business, each carrying a garbage can, which they proceeded to fill with cartons of cigarettes.

Fifty seconds later, at 3:40:50 a.m., they left the business.

Both suspects were described as black males. The first: around 45 years of age, with medium build and facial hair, wearing a dark-colored long-sleeve shirt and jeans. The second: around 25 years of age, with a thin build, wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt.

Both were also wearing gloves, police said.

The ax used by the suspects was located behind the counter and blood—apparently from one of the suspects—was found on a shelf behind the counter, police also said.

An employee was unable immediately to say how many cigarette cartons had been taken or what they are valued at.
