Porter County Cyndi Dykes has released the name of the man whose body was found Friday morning at West Beach, after going missing near Marquette Park Beach on the afternoon of Sunday, Aug. 11.

Dykes identified the man as Pawel Knych, 45, of Itasca, Ill. On Monday, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources declined to identify the man, citing his family’s request that he not be named.

Cause of death, following an autopsy, Dykes said: “multiple significant injuries consistent with being struck by a water craft.” Manner of death: accident.

“Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating the incident as a boating accident,” DNR said on Monday. “At this time it is believed the victim was the only occupant of the boat and was struck by his own boat after falling overboard for an unknown reason.”

“There is no further information available at this time,” Dykes said.
