Coroner: 12-year-old boy drowns in Fairhaven Church pool

Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris said in a press release sent to the Chesterton Tribune this morning that a 12-year-old Chicago boy drowned in the swimming pool at Fairhaven Baptist Church in Chesterton on Tuesday.

The boy was identified as Davion Henderson who had been part of a church group from Chicago visiting Fairhaven Baptist Church yesterday.

Harris said that Henderson was swiming in the pool with other people when he was discovered unresponsive. A 5:03 p.m. Porter EMS transported him to Porter Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:26 p.m.

Chesterton Fire Chief John Jarka told the Tribune that his department recieved the call at 4:31 p.m. and arrived on scene at 4:38 p.m. to find Porter Firefighters trying to revive the boy using CPR. Other agencies responding were Chesterton Police, Porter Police, Porter County Sheriff’s Police and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Conservation officers. CFD cleared the scene at 4:47 p.m., Jarka said.

Porter Assitant Fire Chief Jay Craig said an off-duty firefighter from Westville was at the chuch event and administered CPR before PFD arrived.

Harris said that witnesses advised the boy was in an area of the pool that was approximately three feet deep when the drowning occurred. An autospy was ordered and results are pending at this time.
