Cooling shelters available in Duneland for folks without air conditioning

Cooling shelters will be open throughout the community for Dunelanders without air conditioning or whose A/C fails during the next few dangerously hot days, with temperatures as high as 100 degrees being forecast through Saturday.

--In Chesterton: the Town Hall meeting room, 726 Broadway. The meeting room is now open 24/7 through the weekend. Water and cots will be provided. No need to call head.

--In Porter: call the Porter Police Department first, at 926-7611. Cooling shelters may include the Community Building in Hawthorne Park, 500 Ackerman Drive; or the Porter Fire Station, 550 Beam St. Transportation may be available for Porter residents, as resources permit.

--In Burns Harbor: the Fire Station, 308 Navajo Trail; with the Town Hall, 1240 N. Boo Road, as an overflow site if needed.

--Also in Chesterton: the Duneland YMCA, 215 Roosevelt St. in Chesterton. Open 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday; 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

--In Chesterton as well: the Thomas Branch of the Westchester Public Library, 200 W. Indiana Ave. Open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

--Also in Porter: the Hageman Branch of the Westchester Public Library, 100 Francis St. Open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday; 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday; closed on Sunday.
