A Michigan City motorist was injured and cited on Saturday after Chesterton Police said that she was texting while driving.

According to police, at 1:16 a.m. Carolyn J. Kelly, 25, was westbound on U.S. Highway 20 when, west of Harrison Road, she crossed the center line and collided with a second vehicle eastbound on U.S. 20.

The driver of the second vehicle was Dale P. Hiteman, 57, of LaPorte, who sustained a sprained wrist but refused medical treatment at the scene, police said.

Witnesses advised police that Kelly crossed the center line at the bend where U.S. 20 and C.R. 1400N intersect.

Kelly was transported to the Franciscan Alliance ER department on Indian Boundary Road, where she advised police that she had been texting just prior to the crash.

Kelly was issued a citation for driving left of center and use of a telecommunications device while operating and police said that other possible charges could be pending. The report was forwarded to the Porter County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for review.

Police estimated total damage to Kelly’s 2011 Honda Civic and Hiteman’s 2012 Honda Accord at up to $50,000.
