A child was killed on Thursday in a two-vehicle accident on the Indiana Toll Road in Lake County, the Indiana State Police said.

The victim was identified as Thatcher Swanson, 7, of Chicago.

According to police, at 10:39 a.m. Anthony M. Swanson, 38, also of Chicago, was eastbound in the center lane of the Toll Road when he reduced his speed while traveling over a bridge at the 12 mile marker, after observing several vehicles stopped partially in the right lane. Police said the “people were reportedly outside of their vehicles attempting to capture a stray dog that had run onto the interstate.”

As Swanson braked his 2017 Chevrolet Volt, a semi-tractor trailer traveling behind him in the center lane “rear-ended the Chevrolet at a high rate of speed” and the child, Thatcher Swanson, was ejected from the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries, police said.

Swanson and his front-seat passenger, a female, sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries, police said. They were transported to Methodist Hospital Northlake Campus in Gary.

The operator of the semi, Javier A. Ayala, 51, of Cleveland, Ohio, escaped injury. The semi was hauling corrosive acid but there was no load loss, police said.

The eastbound lanes of the Toll Road at this location were closed for approximately six hours, police added.
