Both of the
Chesterton Police Department’s K-9 units are now on major medical.
As Police Chief
Dave Cincoski reported at the Police Commission’s meeting Thursday night,
Kahr--partnered with Officer Erik Herbert--is recovering from a hernia
surgery performed the previous week.
The surgery was
successful but Kahr will be convalescing for approximately four months,
Cincoski said. It was performed by the Purdue University’s teaching
veterinary clinic, he added, at “a very large discount which we appreciate
very much.”
Kahr had been
ailing for some time before the hernia was diagnosed, Cincoski noted.
Igor, on the other
hand, the CPD’s other K-9 unit, partnered with Sgt. Dan Rocha, continues to
recover after breaking his leg in training not quite a year ago. The hope
remains that Igor will be able to return to full duty but at a minimum
light-duty.
Kahr and Igor are
each trained to detect narcotics and conduct tracks and have been involved
in scores of traffic stops and searches.
A Generous Donation

Thanks from the
BHPD
And members took
receipt of a note from Burns Harbor Town Marshal Mike Heckman, thanking the
CPD and Cincoski for assisting his department with traffic control on the
afternoon of Sept. 1, when several thousand United Steelworkers converged on
Local 6787 to march to ArcelorMittal’s East Gate in a showing of solidarity,
some 15 hours after their contracts with Arcelor and U.S. Steel Corporation
expired.
