Charges filed in fatal Lake Michigan boat crash

Indiana conservation officers have filed charges as a result of investigation of a boat crash involving Tony Gibson, 37, of Lake Village, Indiana, it was announced today.

Gibson was booked into the Lake County Jail Friday on multiple charges including: Operating a motor boat while intoxicated resulting in death (two counts), reckless homicide (two counts), criminal recklessness (two counts), operating a motorboat while intoxicated, speeding, and exceeding the nighttime speed limit of 10 mph.

The crash occurred on Lake Michigan between July 22 and July 23, 2016, officers said.

Gibson was operating his 42í Fountain Powerboat, when it collided with the breakwall near the Arcelor Mittal steel plant in East Chicago.

Richard A. Wade, of Hammond, and Timothy P. Dunlap, of Lynwood, both passengers on Gibsonís boat, died as a result of the crash.

The menís bodies were recovered near the crash site on the morning of July 23, 2016.

Conservation officers were assisted by investigators from the Indiana State Police and the United States Coast Guard.
