A motorist sustained what the Chesterton Fire Department described as “minor injuries” early this morning after his car was struck by a train on the Norfolk Southern grade-crossing on North 15th Street.

Capt. Tony Coslet gave the Chesterton Tribune this account of the incident: at approximately 1:29 a.m. the motorist was southbound on North 15th Street when he apparently attempted to cross the tracks and his Chevrolet Corvette was struck by an eastbound train.

Initial contact was made to the driver’s side headlight and bumper, Coslet said, and--instead of pushing the Corvette in front of the engine and down the tracks--the train popped the car completely out of the grade-crossing.

Firefighters extricated the man from the Corvette by removing the driver’s side door and he was then transported to Porter Regional Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Coslet said.

The CFD cleared the scene at 2:29 a.m.

The CPD was still investigating the accident this morning and as of deadline had not completed a report on it.
