Chesterton firefighters responded to a vehicle fire on Sunday at the Midwest Construction Company at 1331 Broadway.

Capt. Aimee Gilbert told the Chesterton Tribune today that, at 1:45 p.m., the CFD was dispatched to the business after a fire started in the underside of an older model Dodge truck. Firefighters used approximately 400 gallons to extinguish the fire, which on their arrival had spread to the pickupís rear tires.

Gilbert said that the employees were working to jumpstart the truck--which hadnít been operated in something like a year--and that a malfunction in the fuel pump appears to have been the cause.

The CFD cleared the scene at 2:07 p.m.

Accident Response

Later in the day, at 9:26 p.m., the CFD responded to the 300 block of East U.S. Highway 20 in Pine Township, after a man drove off the road, Gilbert said.

The man--who appears to have suffered a medical issue--was westbound on U.S. 20 when he left the roadway to the north and ran into heavy brush and deadfall some 10 feet off the highway. Firefighters were forced to cut multiple tree limbs in order to open the vehicleís door and pull the man out, Gilbert said.

The man was transported to Porter Regional Hospital.

The CFD cleared the scene at 9:56 p.m.
